Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) are neuro-developmental conditions that usually tends to emerge in early childhood, with boys being diagnosed 2-3 times more often than girls.
The classic signs that parents and teachers notice are:
- Inattention, hyperactivity and being easily distracted
- Difficulty concentrating and sitting still
- Inability to control impulsive thoughts and behaviors
- Easily distracted by noises and activities
- Always moving—fingers, hands, arms, feet or legs
The actual causes of ADHD/ADD are unknown, however, current thought is that it is a combination of an overactive, disrupted nervous system and a decrease in the brain’s ability to filter out sights, sounds, thoughts and emotions that are irrelevant to a situation or activity.
The traditional approach to treating these symptoms is to prescribe medication. Adderall and Ritalin are some of the more popular prescriptions. Unfortunately, Ritalin® is a schedule II controlled substance related to, and producing similar effects as, amphetamines and cocaine. The side effects, including personality changes and permanent changes to the brain, cause many parents to look for alternatives.
Chiropractic is a natural, non-drug solution for those struggling with ADHD/ADD. We look for interference in the nervous system causing irritation, tension, and distortions within the spine.
Chiropractors do not directly treat ADHD/ADD. However, because it is a neuro-developmental condition involving the brain and spinal cord, reducing the nervous system interference often reduces and resolves the nervous system tension allowing the body to communicate and heal.
